Same Love

“When I was in the third grade I thought that I was gay,
‘Cause I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight.
I told my mom, tears rushing down my face
She’s like “Ben you’ve loved girls since before pre-k, trippin’.”
Yeah, I guess she had a point, didn’t she?
Bunch of stereotypes all in my head.
I remember doing the math like, “Yeah, I’m good at little league.”
A preconceived idea of what it all meant
For those that liked the same sex
Had the characteristics
The right wing conservatives think it’s a decision
And you can be cured with some treatment and religion
Man-made rewiring of a predisposition
Playing God, aw nah here we go
America the brave still fears what we don’t know
And “God loves all his children” is somehow forgotten
But we paraphrase a book written thirty-five-hundred years ago
I don’t know”

These lines are from the Grammy song of the year nominated song, Same Love written and performed by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. A rap song which supports and stands up for the rights of the homo-sexual community is rare considering the fact that most of the rap musicians tend to objectify women in their lyrics and they tend to demonise the “gay” word. Man has always been afraid of what he cannot understand. Many a centuries have seen race wars, religious wars and many such discriminatory conflicts which is shameful. The basic right of any human is the right to belong and if that right is taken away, then that is something that we must fight for, together as a community.

The most common perception of parents when they learn that their children aren’t straight is that there is something wrong with them. They must be cured. Society would shun them, make their lives miserable and it is their duty as their parents to prevent this sort of demonization. Many parents in the USA send their children to special camps wherein through the doctrines of religion and orthodox iron clad rules of conduct, children are taught the actual way of living. They are taught to be normal, to like the opposite sex and to bear the responsibility like any ‘normal’ human being. Being curbed at such a young age creates a deep regression that chokes the lives of these cured kids and prevents them from being truly happy. The situation in India is way worse. Children feel scared to come out because they KNOW that the society will shun them, their friends will abandon them and that they will never been seen in the same sight again.

Now let me give you a scenario. What if the tables turn? What if it was ‘normal’ to be gay and ‘ungodly’ to be straight? What if the bible and all the religious scriptures believed that it was sacrilegious to love the opposite sex and you were the one of the few who did so? What if you lived in a world which prevents you from expressing your own sexuality and you had to live your years away, maybe unhappily married and pretending to be someone else? Sad isn’t it. The popular song would be something like this.

“When I was in the third grade I thought that I was straight,
‘Cause I could dunk, my uncle was, and I kept my room gay.
I told my mom, tears rushing down my face
She’s like “Ben you’ve loved boys since before pre-k, trippin’.”
Yeah, I guess she had a point, didn’t she?
Bunch of stereotypes all in my head.
I remember doing the math like, “Yeah, I’m good at little league.”
A preconceived idea of what it all meant
For those that liked the oppsite sex
Had the characteristics
The right wing conservatives think it’s a decision
And you can be cured with some treatment and religion
Man-made rewiring of a predisposition
Playing God, aw nah here we go
America the brave still fears what we don’t know
And “God loves all his children” is somehow forgotten
But we paraphrase a book written thirty-five-hundred years ago
I don’t know”

That world is pretty easy to imagine. Any video on YouTube which might not suit the viewers would be called straight. Any action of affection that any man would show towards any woman would be seen with contempt and he would be taunted for life. Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova would cease to be pioneers. And so would Elton John and Liberace. The world would be a more rainbow place and a monotone would be the sign of protest for the straights. You would be carrying a placard coloured in blue, the colour of the struggle for the straight rights. You would be synonymous with the lesser and you would be considered sick. That world, dear readers, is real for the men and women who chose to love their own gender.

As a straight man living in this society, the only thing I can do is relate and raise my voice in gripe. A society which spites on the average citizen, who questions these discriminatory mandates, needs to change. I believe that the Grammy broadcast of the performance of Same Love is a strong statement which the musical community in the USA has made and we must make similar statements in our everyday lives. Small revolutions lead to change, small revolutions move societies, small revolutions are what we are capable of. So don’t just show solidarity. Raise your voice for those who are courageous enough to defy a culture which prevents your from showing what you are. Support same love. Support gay rights.
