Mumbai Attack-26/11- One of the Most Scared Nights

The 2008 Mumbai attacks had ten terrorist attacking, which lasted for four days. The members of Lashkar-e-Taiba directed the plan from Pakistan. Ajmal Kasab was the only terrorist to survive and was captured alive, he was later hanged in Yerwada Jail in Pune. When asked about the attack, Ajmal confessed that the attack was conducted with the support of Pakistan’s ISI (Inter Service Intelligence). The attack began on Wednesday, 26 November and lasted until 29 November. This attack killed about 164 people and at least 308 people were wounded.


There were eight attacks in total, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, The Oberoi Trident, Leopold Café, Cama Hospital, The Metro Cinema, The Nariman House, and behind The St.Xavier’s College. There was an explosion at Mazagaon, in a taxi. By the 28th morning, police have secured all the sites, except the Taj Hotel. On 29th November, the NSG with the help of OPERATION BLACK TORNADO went into to take away the attackers, which resulted in killing of terrorist.

These terrorist were specially trained for handling advance weapons and bombs, they were also trained in swimming and sailing. These boys were selected by various stage of training such as, psychological, in basic combat, they will induce the terror into the attackers, then comes the Advanced training, where they are thought to handle weapons and bombs and also survival training. Then the final stage is the Commando Training, here the group becomes small where they are thought to sail and marine navigations.

The terrorist came into Mumbai in a speed boat, there were 10 persons in total, and they landed in two locations in Colaba around 8:00 p.m. The attacks in order,

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was attacked by two attackers, Khan and Kasab, they began the attack by 9:30 p.m., the two gun men entered the open hall and then fired at everything they saw using an AK-47. They killed around 58 people and injured about 104 people, and they ended the attack by 10.45 p.m. As soon as they finished their attack in CHT, they fled the scene and came out and open fired at the civilians and police men, killing 8 police men, and they moved towards Cama Hospital to kill the patients, on the way they crossed a police station, but the police men were afraid to stop those gun men and they sealed the gates and switched off the lights. The hospital staff locked the gates and the patient wards. When they found that the hospital was closed, they started firing in the next lane, at that time Mumbai Anti Terrorist squad under the chief Hermant Karkare were searching the CST to find nothing, and then found the terrorist in the next lane, both open fired, but the chief along with three others were killed, there was another gun battle which led to the death of Khan, while Kasab was wounded and captured alive.

Leopold Café was also attacked, two gun men open fired, and they killed about 10 people including some foreigners in that list and injured many people.

Taxi Bomb blast also took place, two taxi’s were set to explode, one burst at 10:40 at Vile Parle, killing 2 people, while the other one burst at Wadi Bunder on 10:20 to 10:25. This blast killed 3 people, and injured about 15 people.

Taj Mahal and Oberoi Trident were the two other targets. There were a total of six explosions in Taj hotel; one was in the lobby, two in elevators, three in the restaurant, and one in Oberoi Trident. The fire fighters rescued about 200 people who were staying in the hotel. But only on 27th, it was known that the terrorist had captured some people including foreigners. During this while, RAF, MARCOS, NSG, had surrounded both the hotels, mean while the attackers were getting the information by means of television, so the feeds to both the hotels were cut down. The security forces went in, and battled with the terrorist, during this battle, all the nine terrorist were killed, while Sandeep Kumar of NSG along with 32 hostages of Oberoi Trident were killed. There were members of European Parliament Committee on International Trades in the Taj hotel. All the committee members, left the hotel just before the attack started, but Hungarian MEP’s assistant was shot.

Nariman House, also known as Mumbai Chabad House, were taken down by two gun men and held many residents as hostages. The Police took over the adjacent building, and fired, wounding one. During the first day, 9 hostages were relieved. The next day, the NSG dropped onto the building from the helicopters. They were covered by snipers from either side of the building. During this battle, NSG commando Havaldar Gajender Singh Bisht along with the two terrorist were killed. Six hostages were also killed; in that list one was six months pregnant. There was a radio transmission, which was picked up by the Indian Intelligence, spoke by the attackers,”the life of Jews is 50 times more worth than that of non Jews “. Injury reports on some bodies suggested that they might have been tortured.

By the 27 morning, the NSG had secured all the places, which included Nariman House, Oberoi Trident. The NSG believed that Taj Hotel was free from attackers, but later news showed that there were three attackers alive in the Taj Hotel. The final operation was completed by the NSG commandos at 8 a.m. 29th November, killing all the three attackers and securing the place. The NSG saved 250 hostages from Oberoi Trident, 300 from Taj Hotel and 60 from Nariman House.

The Mumbai attacks were planned by Lashkar-e-Taiba militants inside Pakistan, and executed by ten young armed men who was trained and sent to Mumbai. The attackers planned this mission before several months and also knew areas where they could hide and come out as soon as the security forces left.

This was what happened in Mumbai 5 years 5 months before, killing a lot of people and commandos. India with the help of NSG commandoes got the situation under control, but some lives were lost in this mission. India is strengthening up the border security to stop illegal entry of such terrorist.
