Jessica Murder Case

This case is not just an example of crimes against women but also the fact that if you have enough money and are powerful enough you can weasel your way out of anything. Jessica Lal a model in Delhi was working as a barmaid at a crowded socialite party when she was shot dead at around 2 am on 30 April 1999. There were dozens of witnesses who saw the shooter Siddharth Vashisht, also known as Manu Sharma. He was the son of  a wealthy and influential Congress-nominated Member Of Parliament Venod Sharma. Even though many people saw him commit the crime, Manu Sharma was acquitted in the initial trial.

After a lot of pressure from the media and the people the case was reopened and was tried in the Delhi high court and was finally given the sentence of life imprisonment on 20th December, 2006.

Nirbhaya Rape Case

This is a gang rape case of 23 year old Nirbahaya who was raped in a moving bus on 16th december,2012. She was travelling with a male friend who was beaten up and she was raped by six men in total who were on the bus. She died because of her injuries thirteen days later. She wasn’t just raped but was subject to violence too. She had to bear things we can’t even talk about let alone explain. She was taken to a hospital in Singapore to treat her of her injuries but she gave in on December 29th and passed away. Of the six accused men one of them was a juvenile. The mail culprit was found dead in his cell in Tihar jail. And the others were given death sentence by the fast track court where the trial took place.

She was returning after watching a movie with her friend at 9:30 pm when she boarded the bus after the kid on board told her that they were headed in the same direction. And after they go on, her friend was beaten up and she was dragged to one end of the bus where she was raped and beaten up. After this assault both the people were thrown out of the moving bus. After which they were taken to the nearby hospital for treatment.

Ruchika Girhotra Case

The Ruchika Girhotra Case involves the molestation of 14-year-old Ruchika Girhotra in 1990 by the Inspector General of Police Mr. Shambu (S.P.S. Rathore) in Haryana, India. After she made a complaint, the victim, her family, and her friends were systematically harassed by the police leading to her eventual suicide. Not just this after she had filed the complaint she was expelled from the school and the reason stated was that it was due to non payment on fees, but the truth was that the school had in fact refused to take her fees and had unjustly expelled her.  On 22 December 2009, after 19 years, 40 adjournments, and more than 400 hearings, the court finally pronounced Rathore guilty.

Not being able to bear all of this and after seeing the system fail her Ruchika committed suicide on December 28th, 1993. Even her family had to shift away from that place because they were being harassed. Justice prevalied but after such along time.

These are one a few of the many many cases of violence against the women. These are one the most horrifying cases ever. These cases have shook the entire country and have given shivers to those who have heard about them. It is thanks to the media and the people of our country due to which these women have been given justice. Even though it has taken a long time but justice has indeed prevailed. And it was all because of media and the people who could not take this injustice. I just hope that these incidents do not happen again and the women do not have to suffer this violence.
