Women are always considered to be the back bone of a nation. In the recent times, women have started moving along with men in all kinds of activities. It was in the olden times, women were asked to stay at home and take care of the household works. They were not allowed to participate in any kind of activities that were carried out by men. They were always given the second grade within the human beings.

In the recent times, women have come out of the shell and have proved all men wrong. They are into almost all the fields and also have received honors in those fields. Military was a field that was long thought as an area where only men could stay, but in the recent times women have started representing the Country’s Military. Most of the countries have women in their Defensive forces, who have equal right as men possess. Let’s see some of the countries, who have included women in their countries defenses,

South Africa

South African women have long thrived along with men in the SADF (South African Defense Force) and SANDF (South African National Defense Force). They have served in the World War I and World War II in auxiliary roles.  During the Second World War South Africa had five service organizations for women such as the South African Military Service, The Navy, The Air force, The Military Police and the women’s auxiliaries attached to the army.

During the 1970’s and 1980’s, women were included in the Civil defense organizations who were trained along with men to defend the country from the terrorist attacks. These training include, training for self defense, traffic control, crowd control, antiriot procedures, first aid and fire fighting.

Australia

Women entered into this arena when Army Nursing Service was included in the year 1899. In the Present scenario, women make up 12.8% of the Australian Defense Force and 17.5% of the reserves. What so ever, only 75% of the total number of available roles is for women. In spite of all these restrictions, Australian Defense Force had the highest number women employ in the world. Anyways, like most other countries, even in Australia, women are not allowed into direct combat.

Women also have got into the submarines in the year 1998. The first women deployment of female sailors was in the Persian Gulf during the 1991 Gulf war.

Israel

In most of the Muslim countries, women face a lot of restrictions. But, in the recent times, women in Muslim countries have started proving their talents in most of the fields.

Some women have been part of the IDF in the 1948 war of Independence and Operation Kadesh in 1956. Like most of the countries, women were not allowed in combat positions. Women have played a significant role in every war and Operations. It was in 2001, the first Israel woman received her wings.

Pakistan

Pakistan

Pakistan is one of the Muslim countries that are strict on their basic deeds. But, Pakistan is the only Islamic country that has appointed women in high ranks. Women have been in the Pakistani Military since 1947 and at present there is a sizeable amount number of women in the army. Women have participated in most of the war that was carried out by the Pakistanis. They are not allowed to participate in combat roles but would take part in non-combat roles. More women are coming each year to join the army, so as to serve the country.

Sri Lanka

The SLAF (Sri Lanka Air Force) is the first gate way for the women into the Military. At Present, female Personnel of all the services play an active part in all the operations. Sri Lankan women join the army with their own interest. In the beginning they were restricted within the Medical field, but later seeing their performances and interest, they were allowed into almost all the fields where men actively work. Since 2008, 3 female officers have been in the role of Major General and Commodore.

Denmark

Denmark

Denmark is a country that has recruited women as early as 1934. Women were not allowed to participate in direct combat but they can volunteer in any other regular Danish armed forces. The women have proved that they are capable of participating in the combat. Since 1998, women have participated in the combat. They have participated in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. A record in 2010 sated that there are 5% of women in army, 8.65 in air force and 6.9% in navy.

France

France

In the early 1800’s, women participated in the military by preparing meals for the Soldiers. Their major role started in the year 1914 when women were recruited in the medical personnel. In the year 1974, they were given the same ranks that men possess.

Valeria Andre, a neurosurgeon, is the first ever French woman to obtain the rank of three star general as Medecin General Inspecteur. She is also the first woman to fly a Helicopter during a combat.

Woman makes up to 15% of the French Military, with 11% in Army, 21% in Air Force, 13% in Navy and 50% in Medical corps. French women take up the first position within Europe in terms of Number.

Russia

Russia

Russian army is one of the strongest army in the world. They have the power to withstand almost any army. Women have been a part of the army since 1917. In the beginning, Russia lost a lot of women but as time progressed more women joined the Military and started fighting along with men.

As of now, there are 1,60,000 to 1,70,000 women in the Russian Military, making it 10% of the Russia’s Military strength.

United Kingdom

United Kingdom

UK also has one of the world’s strongest unit. Women have been a part of the army since the early 1700’s. Women have participated in every war UK has gone through. There were about 600,000 women in the Second world war who served in the British women’s auxiliary services such as the Auxiliary Territorial Services, the women’s Auxiliary Air Services and the Naval Services.

It was Queen Boudica who included women into the forces in the early AD 62. This inclusion is considered to be the gate way for women into the forces. While, in 1917, Queen Mary’s Army was formed, where 47,000 women served.

UK women have served in the army for a long time and it is also with their support the UK Military have shown their Strength.

United States

United States

USA’s first women soldier was Deborah Sampson from the MIT. She enlisted as a soldier with a pseudonym “Robert Shurtliff”. She served in the army for 3 year and was very brave during her time.

A lot of women have been a part of the USA’s Military. During the First World War, 21,498 women served as Army nurses. There were 350,000 American Women who served during the Second World War. It was in 1974, women received their first wings.

On December 20, 1989, Captain Linda L. Bray became the first women to command the Soldiers in the battle during the invasion of Panama.

American women have served in the military for a long time and have participated in most of the major wars. They have become a strong unit by now.

These are some of the many countries that have included women in the Country’s Defensive Forces. As time progresses, women are getting equal rights as men possess including the pay. Women always have proved that they can also show their skills if the opportunity is given. Let’s support them to come forward in their lives rather than keeping them inside a shell.
